It’s often difficult to place a firm price on an assignment because there are several variables involved in the pricing of a project. One is the amount of research involved in producing a piece of work. Another is my familiarity with a topic. Another is the complexity of the assignment.

Take a business plan for example. In opening a business an individual might need a business plan simply to clarify their own goals and help keep them moving in the desired direction. Another individual, however, who is seeking start-up capital will need to present the plan to a financial institution or group of investors. This plan would have to be far more comprehensive than one simply being used as a guide or set of goals. Obviously the time and research required for each project would vary greatly as would the cost of the work.

The same might apply to Web copy, sales copy, press releases, etc.

Freelance writers generally charge in one of several ways. These are:

Per Page.
Per Hour.
Per Word.
Per Project.

My preference is per project. However, I would be willing to provide a quote to a prospective client based on any of the above scales. I realize that you are looking to get a rough idea of the cost of your project so I’ll say that after all is said and done, my rate usually works out to around 10 cents per word or less, though with a firm commitment for multiple assignments this rate will probably be far less.
